Even as investigators were hunting for the perpetrator of the botched "man-caused disaster" in Times Square, our cool homeland security secretary, Janet Napolitano, was reassuring a frazzled nation that the failed bombing appeared to be an isolated incident -- a "one-off" -- and avoided the notion of (much less the word) "terrorism."
And citizens should not infer anything based on a litany of historical and anecdotal evidence, even after the fact, lest some group feel demonized...

"NY car bomb suspect cooperates, but motive mystery," an AOL News headline (see screencap at right) for an AP story published this morning.
Really?
Of course five paragraphs into the article, AP writers Tom Hays and John Christoffersen quote Attorney General Holder as saying:
Based on what we know so far, it is clear that this was a terrorist plot aimed at murdering Americans in one of the busiest places in our country...

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stated Tuesday that he “will not tolerate any bias” in the wake of the arrest of the Times Square bombing suspect, who was a U.S. citizen from Pakistan. Noting that “a few bad apples” exist among all cultural ethnicities, Bloomberg said he would not tolerate a backlash against Muslim Americans following the attempted attack.
Bloomberg then suggested the would-be bomber was a domestic terrorist acting alone, reacting against the passage of healthcare.

There's a cynical theme growing in the media that Faisal Shahzad, the man accused of attempting to set off a car bomb in New York's Times Square Saturday, was driven to violence by the loss of his job, the loss of his house, and his anger towards former President George W. Bush.
In all of this theorizing -- or what some might call psychobabble -- those making the assertion have yet to ponder if six years of Bush Derangement Syndrome might more likely be involved...

Pres. Obama believes in Miranda rights and civilian trials for terrorists who seek to kill Americans. But when it comes to companies that have supplied untold quantitites of energy resources to the American economy and paid out billions in wages and supply purchases to American workers and firms, well, punitive ex post facto laws are PBO's order of the day.
Under the law of the land, the Oil Pollution Act limits BP's liability for spill-related to damages to $75 million. But Pres. Obama "strongly supports" the adoption of an ex post facto law that would retroactively expand BP's liability greatly.
From the official White House blog ...

Opponents of off-shore drilling were quick to jump on the Deepwater Horizon disaster as proof that they were right: Off-shore drilling is just too risky a proposition for America to allow.
But, they missed the ultimate point.
If it chooses, the United States can prohibit off-shore drilling within our Exclusive Economic Zone, which extends 200 miles from America’s coastline; but we cannot actually eliminate off-shore drilling.
The rest of the world is free to “drill, baby, drill” outside of that barrier and it’s very clear that the rest of the world doesn’t have any qualms about doing so...

"You never want a serious crisis to go to waste," Rahm Emanuel famously said.
And why should we think this administration isn't letting the Gulf of Mexico oil crisis go to waste?

The recent explosion and collapse of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico was horrendous. There is no question that steps should be taken to see that any correctable errors made don't happen again.
But, from the point of view of the economy, national security and even environmental quality, halting new oil and gas development because of this one isolated incident would be an even worse disaster.
We need the oil and natural gas off of the U.S. coasts, and U.S. offshore drilling is historically the safest in the world:
- Since 1990, less than one-one thousandth of 1 percent of the oil produced in U.S. state or federal waters has spilled.
- Furthermore, when tankers leak, run aground or founder and sink, they tend to do so in port or near shore, resulting in more severe environmental damage.
- The United States has huge deposits of oil offshore; the Minerals Management Service estimates that the U.S. outer continental shelf (OCS) contains more than 46 billion barrels of oil, more than double the current U.S. reserve, and more than 419 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.

Senators working on an energy and climate bill should take off the table provisions that expand offshore drilling, one Democratic senator suggested Monday. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said that the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico should force lawmakers to reconsider plans for expanded offshore exploration.

In a high-stakes move, Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) are planning to forge ahead with or without Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and introduce an energy bill next week, according to sources familiar with the planning. Kerry and Lieberman are gambling that the dramatic oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will help, rather than hurt, momentum for the legislation....

Downtown business owners spent Sunday repairing shattered windows and doors after a May Day rally Saturday night turned into a riot with approximately 250 people marching along Pacific Avenue, some carrying makeshift torches, throwing large rocks and paint bombs, and spray-painting walls with graffiti.
At least 18 businesses suffered damage during the rally in honor of international workers that began at 9 p.m. and escalated into mayhem around 10:30 p.m., police said. Investigators estimated damage at $100,000, though some business owners say it's much higher...

The push is on for providing amnesty to the estimated 25 million illegal aliens in this country.
The supporters of this effort include President Barack Obama, former president George W. Bush, Senator John McCain, Majority Leader Harry Reid and New York Senator Chuck Schumer.
Senator Schumer is now chairman of the immigration subcommittee previously chaired by the late Senator Ted Kennedy, a major amnesty proponent.
Amnesty supporters see themselves as taking the high road and claim that amnesty opponents are opposed to immigration, when nothing could be further from the truth...

Mexico's bloody drug wars saw a new spasm of killings late Saturday into Sunday, with 25 people fatally shot in the northern state of Chihuahua bordering the United States. Seven of the deaths occurred in violence-plagued Ciudad Juarez, Mexico's murder capital, bringing to 62 the number of people killed in the city over the past week.
So far this year, more than 850 people have been killed in Ciudad Juarez, a city of 1.3 million, while more than 2,660 were killed there in 2009, according to official figures...

Following weekend protests against the new Arizona law cracking down on illegal immigration, support for the Arizona policy remains unchanged.
However, a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 25% have a favorable view of those who marched and protested for illegal immigrant rights in major cities. Fifty percent (50%) hold an unfavorable opinion and another 26% are not sure.
Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters still favor legislation like Arizona's that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. Thirty-two percent (32%) oppose such a law. Those figures are virtually unchanged from a week ago.
Eighty percent (80%) of Republicans and 62%of voters not affiliated with either major party favor the law that gives local police greater authority to question immigration status.
Fifty-five percent (55%) of Democrats are opposed to it.

The Congress of the United States—an institution that spent a chunk of the past year cajoling passage of the most contentious legislation devised in decades—may not have the "appetite" to take on another "controversial issue," namely immigration reform, this year, according to President Barack Obama.
Bummer.
But is immigration, in the broadest sense of the idea, really a contentious matter? For the most part, the controversy we face isn't about immigration at all.
It's about the systematic failure of federal government to enforce the law...
