Anti-Military 'Green Zone' Bombs at Box Office

Subject: txt gdd gwot heroes -
It seems that Hollywood never learns its lesson. The anti-military "Green Zone" has now become but the latest of such movies to bomb bigtime at the box office. This report from a Los Angeles Times blog chronicles how "Green Zones" has joined a list of similar financial disasters such as "In the Valley of Elah," "Rendition," and "Redacted":

"Green Zone" is the last drama set to be released by a major studio related to the Iraq war, and Hollywood is undoubtedly grateful for it after the picture, directed by Paul Greengrass and starring Matt Damon, opened to just $14.5 million domestically and $9.7 million overseas.

It's the latest in a string of flops that include "Body of Lies," "The Kingdom" and "Stop-Loss." Even "The Hurt Locker," while not a major disappointment given its low budget, is the lowest- grossing best picture Oscar winner in recent history.

The Anti-Fascist

Subject: txt gwot islm - intl -
At a time when President Obama insists that the most pressing threat facing America is a free market health care system, a recent speech in Britain's House of Lords by Dutch parliamentarian Geert Wilders is a salutary reminder of what is really endangering us all: The rising tide of Islamic supremacism codified by authoritative Islam in the brutally repressive law of Shariah - the law of Saudi Arabia and Iran among other Islamic states.

For pointing out that danger and striving in his native Netherlands to counteract it, Mr. Wilders is being reviled and slandered. Condemnation from the Islamists is to be expected. But from America as well? [snip]

In fact, at great personal cost and with extraordinary courage, Geert Wilders has been trying to save his country from the true fascists of our time, those whose demagoguery is unmistakable and whose extremism is all too real: Shariah-adherent Muslims in the Netherlands, in Europe more generally and in the wider world - including, increasingly here in the United States... [snip]

Mr. Wilders deserves our thanks and support, not denunciations from fellow freedom-fighters that unintentionally provides political cover for our common enemies' efforts to discredit and, if possible, to kill him.

China Demands U.S. Mend Diplomatic Fences
BEIJING — China has blamed the United States for causing "serious disturbances" in their relationship.

Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi reiterated China's criticism of US arms sales to Taiwan and President Barack Obama's meeting last month with the Dalai Lama:

"The United States should properly handle the relevant sensitive issues and work with the Chinese side to return the China-US relationship to a track of stable development,"

[I.e., you're not treating us with the deference an 800 pound gorilla is due...]

Taiwan and China have been governed separately since a civil war ended in 1949 but Beijing considers the island part of its territory. China views the Dalai Lama as a separatist seeking an independent Tibet, which he denies.

The Sino-US enmity has emerged just as the United States and other world powers seek Chinese support for pressure on Iran over its nuclear program.

Yang repeated Beijing's position that a resolution of the Iran nuclear issue must be achieved through talks, not sanctions...

President Obama’s budget outlines a plan to pay states to grow their welfare roles and eliminate efforts to fight family breakdown in low-income communities.

Despite the fact that low work hours and fatherlessness are two of the greatest contributors to poverty in the United States, the newly released budget provides incentives for states to increase the size of their caseloads and also wipes out funding for healthy marriage programs that aim to decrease the number of children growing up in single-parent homes...

Unconstitutional Procedure Being Used to Pass Unconstitutional ObamaCare

Subject: txt lbrty bbro - hcare -
Michael McConnell, Professor and Director of the Constitutional Law Center at Stanford Law School, explains it this way at the Wall Street Journal today:

Democratic congressional leaders have floated a plan to enact health-care reform by a procedure dubbed “the Slaughter solution.” It is named not for the political carnage that it might inflict on their members, but for Rep. Louise Slaughter (D., N.Y.), chair of the powerful House Rules Committee, who proposed it. Under her proposal, Democrats would pass a rule that deems the Senate’s health-care bill to have passed the House, without the House actually voting on the bill. This would enable Congress to vote on legislation that fixes flaws in the Senate health-care bill without facing a Senate filibuster, and without requiring House members to vote in favor of a Senate bill that is now politically toxic.

McConnell is right. The Constitution says that:

Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a Law, be presented to the President of the United States; If he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such Reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the Bill, it shall be sent, together with the Objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a Law.

If a branch does not vote on a bill, then that bill did not pass...

Obama: Polls Do Not Reflect the People

[Today's insult.]

President Obama was out stumping for his health care bill in Ohio today. In the conclusion of his speech, he told the crowd that he would ignore the polls and do what the people want:

"The American people want to know if it’s still possible for Washington to look out for these interests, for their future. So what they’re looking for is some courage. They’re waiting for us to act. They’re waiting for us to lead. They don’t want us putting our finger out to the wind. They don’t want us reading polls. They want us to look and see what is the best thing for America, and then do what’s right. And as long as I hold this office, I intend to provide that leadership."

What are the polls but an expression of what the American people want? It is one thing to say that the polls are wrong or that the people have been misled. But to say the American people want us to ignore the polls is to say the American people want us to ignore what they say.

As it happens, last week IBD published a profile of the late George Gallup, founder of his namesake polling company. In researching the story, I struck by a quote I came across of Gallup defending his profession from critics in Washington.

He always had a high opinion of public opinion. (Gallup poll editor-in-chief Frank) Newport related how after politicians said they didn’t listen to polls, Gallup responded, “Well, just substitute the ‘polls’ with the ‘public.’ They are saying they shouldn’t listen to the people who elected them.”

Seems like Democratic pollsters’ intervention with Obama and the congressional Democrats over health care didn’t work...

First Sowing--Now Reaping

Subject: txt intl nsec owg -
Now that foreign leaders have had more than a year to size up the Obama administration, I think things abroad are going to begin to happen quite quickly. At best, American policy is so lethargic that it will force freeloaders and opportunists to grow up and get out on their own; at worst, we have flipped — and are no longer the world’s staunch bastion of support for free-market capitalist democracy.

At the U.N., America is now indistinguishable from Europe. Most have gotten the message by now that the United States is not particularly committed, at least in the old fashion, to defending Israel from its myriad of material and intellectual enemies.

The world's troublemakers — Ahmadinejad, Chávez, Castro, Putin, etc. — assume that the world's Marshal Will Kane took that buckboard ride out of Haldeyville and just kept on going. China, in its latest tantrum, has essentially announced that we are belligerent rivals. Japan doesn’t quite know what it is doing — only that the U.S. doesn’t either. India is worrying over what happened to the new, now old special friendship.

Latin America realizes that it is “progressive” ideology that wins American attention and understanding, regardless of the economic chaos or repression that goes on in places like Venezuela or Cuba. Iran — well, at this point, the world shrugs that it is a question of when, rather than if. There is a sort of calm for a bit on Russia’s periphery, since its scared former satellites need time to digest that they are entirely on their own if a Georgia-like dispute flares up.

Europe is also in sort of a deer-in-the-headlights trance. It is worried about “the future is Greece,” yet sees no disapproval from the U.S. of such fiscal recklessness; quite the opposite, they see American fiscal recklessness to trump their own. And while the Euro public still is hypnotized by Obamania, the leaders are starting to make some troubling “we got what we asked for” conclusions that a Dreams From My Father Obama doesn’t feel all that attached to either a shared Western tradition or any exceptional commonalities.

The war on terror is a confusing mishmash — part silly new euphemisms about war as legal wrestling, part trumping Bush on renditions, Predator attacks, wiretaps etc., part P.C. revisionist appeals to the Islamic world, and part infantile empty gesturing like closing Guantanamo within a year, trying KSM in a civil court in New York, or hounding former CIA interrogators. If we can't figure it out, how could any abroad?

In other words, we’ve passed the look/see period of 1977–8, and a gut-check 1979 year of decision is almost upon us...

Flap flies in Haiti over U.S. flag absence

The many nations helping Haiti recover from the devastating earthquake that struck there have set up their own military compounds and fly their flags at the entrances.

France's tricolor, Britain's Union Jack and even Croatia's coat of arms flap in the breeze.

But the country whose contributions dwarf the rest of the world's — the United States — has no flag at its main installation near the Port-au-Prince airport.

The lack of the Stars and Stripes does not sit well with some veterans and servicemembers who say the U.S. government should be proud to fly the flag in Haiti, given the amount of money and manpower the U.S. is donating to help the country recover from the Jan. 12 quake.

The Obama administration says flying the flag could give Haiti the wrong idea.

Moody's threatens "downward pressure" on the US's credit rating

Subject: txt mny - .
Moody’s Investor Service, the credit rating agency, will fire a warning shot at the US on Monday, saying that unless the country gets public finances into better shape than the Obama administration projects there would be “downward pressure” on its triple A credit rating.

It projects that the federal borrowing is so high that the interest payments on government debt will grow to more than 15 per cent of government revenues.

Pierre Cailleteau, head of sovereign ratings at Moody’s, said: “The size of debt makes the US vulnerable to an interest rate shock . . . but the level of fiscal ambition is not one that secures for sure the [triple A] rating.”

The report follows concerns recently expressed about the US public finances from the other large rating agencies. Standard & Poor’s warned last week the triple A status of the US was at risk unless the country adopted a credible medium-term plan to rein in fiscal spending. Fitch Ratings issued a critical report on the US in January.

Coffee Party 'Is Loosely Based on Smaller Government and Lower Taxes'???

Subject: txt 1st lbrty 2010 msm bias - TV Reporter:
It's incredible what you can learn from television these days. On Saturday, Brent Frazier of Nashville's CBS affiliate reported on a local Coffee Party. He made no mention of the attendance, but at about 2:06 of the video says:

"The Coffee Party, though very much still in the organizing phase, is loosely based on smaller government and lower taxes. "

I have to wonder how the newshound came to that conclusion.

Was it because the group's founder worked as a volunteer for Barack Obama's presidential campaign?

Or maybe it was the Reuters acknowledgment that

"America’s conservative Tea Party movement may be on the boil, but the left is brewing up its own version in The Coffee Party USA."

Or perhaps it was the Coffee Party participant Frazier interviewed who volunteered for Obama but is now disillusioned because

"Obama's just not pushing the left hard enough"

With reporting skills like that, one thing is clear. Brent has a very bright future in the mainstream media.

On Friday, CBSNews.com's blog ran a gushing article that amounted to free advertising for the left's new fabrication of a burgeoning 'coffee party'. Aside from the friendly tone and complete lack of criticism, the most astounding part was when it claimed that many issues discussed at a Coffee Party could just as well have come from a TEA party...

Condon's article began with the oh-so-innocent headline "Is The "Coffee Party" The Next Big Thing?" The opening paragraph ran like something right from a brochure: [snip]

It's easy to be the next big thing when the media give you all the publicity you need, such as instantly 'featured' in the New York Times, CNN's Political Ticker, the Washington Post, and many local papers like the Seattle Times - all conveniently skipping the part it's the creation of Washington activists and has no grass-roots component... [snip]

In contrast, this is how the Political Hotsheet covered last year's April 15 protest [after months of ignoring the phenomenon altogether]... [snip]

Let's read that whopper from above, one more time:

"The issues likely to come up at Saturday's meetings could very well arise at a Tea Party meeting."

Except for the flaming liberal agendas, embracing of big government, Democrat campaign workers, Plouffe-style astroturfing, calls for regulation, and Facebook notes that "vent" about TEA parties... they're practically the same.

Thanks for the hard-hitting expose, CBS.

A reminder of how grateful we should be to our Iraq veterans

Subject: txt heroes gwot nsec -
You must not miss this beautifully written article by a young soldier returned from Iraq who sacrificed so much--as did his colleagues--to free the people of Iraq at the direction of a Congress and voters who now seem to be oblivious to their accomplishments.

I came home expecting to find the sacrifice of these brave patriots revered at every turn by those who overwhelmingly sent us to war from Washington.
I'm still looking.

If you can't bring yourself to give the living the sense of accomplishment for winning a war that many claimed was endless, at least humor the dead. Allow them to rest knowing that the war that took their lives was won because of their sacrifice.

Is that too much to ask for?

The firefight ebbs. The mortar fire ceases. A few last stray rounds streak past. A cry from behind causes me to turn. Lying in the road is a young Iraqi woman. I run over to help. She’s caught a round just below her temple. Her stunning beauty has been ruined forever.

She cries, “Paper! Paper” over and over until the ambulance arrives to take her away. An old lady emerges from the schoolhouse-turned voting site, sheets of blue paper in hand. She gives one to the wounded girl, who clutches it to her like a prized possession even as the ambulance carries her away.

The ballot was her voice. All she wanted was a chance to exercise it, just once, before she died.

The old woman returns to the school house, but drops another ballot along the way. It drifts in a gentle breeze across the bloodstained asphalt. I stoop down and pick it up. It is all in Arabic, and I have no idea what each set of candidates advocate. That’s not my place, and it doesn’t really matter. I helped make this day happen. This ballot represents the reason why we’re here, why my friends had to die.

I am not naive. I understand that there are individuals who opposed the war in Iraq from the very beginning and I believe their passion, although misguided at times, is rooted in a deep desire for peace. What always baffled me was the reaction they had to pro-victory veterans when we came home. As if we were some robotic arm of the Bush White House. It was foreign for them to understand why winning in Iraq was so important.

Our friends died in this cause.

There is no honor in their death unless we complete the mission they died fighting.

The ones that hold my contempt are those who, even today, know of the sacrifice made, the incredible progress gained and still will not acknowledge what was won on the ground in Iraq. They cheapen the sacrifice of how it was earned. Operation Iraqi Freedom is no more.

Operation New Dawn (the exact same name of the Battle of Fallujah in November 2004) is the new name of the deployment to Iraq.

What we achieved in the face of an implacable enemy, overcoming many in our own government willfully ignorant of our struggle, is what I believe to be the defining moment of my generation. The veteran today is the embodiment of what it means to be an American. Even when our valor was used for political sport, we continued to serve quietly.

This is truly without precedent.
