TEACHERS' UNIONS VS. PROGRESS -- AGAIN

Why does the New York state legislature oppose using data in any way that would identify ineffective teachers?

Ever wonder how effective your child's teacher is? Officials in Albany would rather you didn't know. At least that's the lesson one has to take from their refusal to allow data systems to match students to teachers, though doing so would help the state compete for a pot of perhaps hundreds of millions of federal dollars.

Unions' political interests stand in the way of improving our schools and easing New York taxpayers' burdens, says Marcus A. Winters, a Senior Fellow with the Manhattan Institute.

States must develop data sets that track the individual performance of students over time and match those students to their teachers. Unfortunately, New York has deliberately refused to take that step.

Worse, along with its refusal to improve its data system, the state has kept cities from adopting reforms:

When New York City hinted that it would use its own data system to evaluate teachers based on student test scores, the state legislature passed a law banning the practice...

The findings underscored how dramatically the political landscape has changed during the Obama administration's first year. Tea Party Movement Tops Established Parties in NBC/WSJ Poll Despite Biased Question, Skewed Sample

Subject: txt 2010 msm bias fnn gdd -
Geoffrey Dickens documented the furor of MSNBC's Chris Mathews over the results of an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll (PDF).

Specifically, Mathews was irked that the Tea Party Movement (TPM) was viewed quite a bit more favorably than the two major political parties by those polled (VP=Very Positive; SP=Somewhat Positive; N=Neutral; SN=Somewhat Negative; VN=Very Negative; DK=No Opinion):

  • Tea Party Movement: VP-20%; SP-21%; N-21%; SN-10%; VN-13%; DK-15%
  • Democratic Party: VP-10%; SP-25%; N-19%; SN-19%; VN-26%; DK-1%
  • Republican Party: VP-5%; SP-23%; N-27%; SN-24%; VN-19%; DK-2%

Mathews dismissed the TPM's convincing advantage over the established parties, especially in higher strong positives and lower strong negatives, as being the result of a biased poll question working in the Tea Partiers' favor. I don't think so. In fact, I think the result occurred even though the question is loaded against the TPM.

“What the Russians are suggesting here, in other words, is that the entire global temperature record used by the IPCC to inform world government policy is a crock.”

That is, we have yet further evidence that the data is being cooked to make the long-running claim of an increase in global temperatures, and now to diminish the apparent cooling of said temps. As the gang at EU referendum tout, “it is in Soviet Union that the CRU, NOAA, NASA show the greatest warming.”

US Deal In Copenhagen Wrong For Our Country

All across this nation, families and businesses are struggling to make ends meet. Millions of Americans have lost their jobs and many more worry that they will be next. But Americans are meeting these times with courage and by putting first things first, at least everywhere but the White House.

It is astonishing that in the midst of the worst recession in 26 years, this administration and Democrat leaders continue to advance job-killing proposals like the national energy tax and will carry that message to the global warming convention in Copenhagen.

Rather than making a priority of creating jobs, the president plans to attend negotiations at the United Nation’s convention on climate change in Denmark. This decision is wrong on several levels. The administration’s participation in the Copenhagen negotiations raises a number of concerns that the president should address before catching his flight.

A primary concern is the impact a global cap and tax system will have on our economy.

In June, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would mandate carbon emission reductions amounting to a national energy tax. While there is still a lot of uncertainty about how much the average American household will pay if this national energy tax becomes law, perhaps the best estimate came from President Obama himself.

In 2008, then-Senator Obama said,

“Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket.”

He went on to say that the costs will be passed on to consumers...

It's probably just coincidental that bad numbers about President Obama's much-coveted healthcare legislation came out late last week when few people were paying attention.

Analysts in the Obama administration's Health and Human Services Department reported Friday that the nation's $2.5-trillion annual healthcare tab will not shrink at all under the Democrats' legislative blueprint as being pushed by happy Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader in the Senate.

Instead, they said, the nation's medical costs will actually grow faster under the new bill than they would if that chatty crowd of Washington spenders did absolutely nothing...

Message to Copenhagen

.

Our Constitution Begins, "We the People..."

These are the opening lines of a message to the American delegates in Copenhagen and the rest of the world sent on behalf of the American people by American Solutions. They are meant as a reminder to both Obama Administration officials and international climate activists that under our constitutional system, the American people, not government bureaucrats, are sovereign.

And if you have any doubt that the delegates at Copenhagen need to hear this message, take a look at this:

This is a reference guide being handed out by one of the non-governmental organizations at Copenhagen to keep track of all the proposals to reduce emissions from deforestation and degradation. It's purposefully modeled after the Chinese mass murderer Mao Tse-Tung's "Little Red Book of Communism."

Can the profoundly undemocratic nature of this conference be any clearer?

Radical Environmentalism Is "The New Socialism"

Charles Krauthammer calls the shake down occurring in Copenhagen and the EPA's domestic power grab "the new socialism"

"Following the death of the old socialism with the Soviet empire, the cultural elites went straight from the memorial service for socialism to the altar of the environment. The objective is the same: highly centralized power given to the best and the brightest, the new class of experts and technocrats. This time, however, the alleged justification is saving the planet."

Substituting the Advice and Consent of the Senate with the Bureaucratic Power of the EPA

When he travels to Copenhagen this week, President Obama is reportedly going to pledge to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by 17 percent by 2020.

The Obama Administration's various threats to act unilaterally - both in Copenhagen and at home via the EPA - to achieve this goal occur against the backdrop of this inescapable fact: The Senate, reflecting the will of the American people, refuses to pass the administration's job killing cap and trade legislation.

The result is that the administration is preparing to bypass the Senate with its announcement last week that the EPA will regulate carbon dioxide as a dangerous pollutant .

This would be a breathtakingly anti-democratic and unconstitutional arrogation of power on the part of the President.

And if the question is, "Will the new socialism succeed?" the answer is, "Not if the American people have anything to do with it." Today, the 236th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, American Solutions is issuing a rallying cry to the American people.

Our message is that no imperial presidency, no totalitarian bureaucracy, and no global international elite can or will usurp the power of We the People.

The full text of our ad, which will appear in the daily newspaper of the Copenhagen conference tomorrow:

Our Constitution Requires International Agreements to

Our Environmental Protection Agency Recently Asserted It Has the

Such Action would be Tantamount to our Executive Branch Taxing the American People without

Not only did the former Vice President completely refuse to answer questions about his blatant misrepresentations of the age of the most recent e-mail message obtained from Britain's CRU, a U.N. security official actually disconnected McAleer's microphone to make sure any answers would be unrecorded (video embedded below the fold, h/t Climate Depot):

WH 'Command and Control' EPA Threat Confirms C of C Head's Prediction, Gets Almost No Establishment Media Coverage

Subject: txt grn engry msm -
Has anyone else noticed how chilling it has been during the past few days? Not chilly (though it's been that too). Chilling.

On Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency declared, in the Associated Press's words, that "greenhouse gas emissions are a danger and must be regulated."

The AP, in the item just linked, and many other news outlets carried U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Thomas J. Donahue's warning that regulations based on EPA's declaration could lead to

"a top-down command-and-control regime that will choke off growth by adding new mandates to virtually every major construction and renovation project."

Two days later, in an item carried at FoxNews.com that says it was the result of contributions by Fox's Major Garrett and the AP, a White House official confirmed the legitimacy of Donahue's stated fear (bolds are mine):

"The Obama administration is warning Congress that if it doesn't move to regulate greenhouse gases, the Environmental Protection Agency will take a "command-and-control" role over the process in a way that could hurt business."

It seems to me that an administration threatening "command and control," with its echoes of authoritarian regimes throughout history -- an approach that an opponent predicted would occur, and which has now been promised -- might be, well, I don't know, news at establishment media outlets other than Fox.

But, with rare exceptions, it's not.

Oh, and I almost forgot to note that an APB has gone out on the far left for any and all information that might discredit the Chamber's Donahue.

It's going to take more than adding another sweater to do something about this government-driven, media-complicit chill.

Our country is in big trouble ... huge trouble. It is time that Americans took a hard look at our values, our conception of justice, and our standards for truth. This piece is intended as a first step in that direction.

The story of Tiger Woods and his (now admitted) "infidelity" is everywhere. The Woods' story has piqued the prurient interests of America and the world. The story has dominated the mainstream media for days while the injustice being committed against our Navy Seals and the revelation of the computer code from the CRU (exposing the biggest hoax in the history of the world) have gotten scant attention... [snip]

The mainstream media has downplayed the significance of the CRU documents. The headline of a recent AP story proclaims that the science from the CRU was not faked. Really? As (among others) Marc Sheppard, Lord Monckton, and I have proven the CRU findings most certainly were doctored. The raw date was manipulated to "prove" that the world is exponentially warming. There is no doubt about this.

And still, the mainstream media has not challenged Al Gore on the blatant absurdity of his claim that the documents were at least ten years old and have no real impact on the AGW debate. CNN did ask him to recite his new poem on the impending doom of mother earth. See that video here. (But not if you have recently eaten a meal. You could lose it.)

John 8:32 states the following:

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

The corollary of this brilliant piece of scripture should also be written. It would go something like this:

If you ignore the lies, the lies will imprison you.

Wake up America. The time for the truth to set us free is growing very, very short

A Pittsburgh-based coal company, CONSOL Energy, will lay off nearly 500 of its West Virginia workers next year. CONSOL Energy's political problems are not unique to the mining industry, which has suffered under the Obama Administration:

  • The Environmental Protection Agency is already holding 79 surface mining permits in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
  • The EPA says these permits could violate the Clean Water Act and warrant "enhanced" review.
  • The agency went even further in October, announcing plans to revoke a permit for the Spruce No. 1 Mine in West Virginia.

CEO Nicholas J. DeIuliis said the poor economy compounded by legal challenges by environmental activists forced CONSOL to slash jobs:

  • It is challenging enough to operate CONSOL'S coal and gas assets in the current economic downturn without having to contend with a constant stream of activism in rehashing and reinterpreting permit applications that have already been approved or in the inequitable oversight of our operations.
  • Customers will grow reluctant to deal with energy producers they perceive are unable to guarantee a reliable supply due to regulatory uncertainty; this inhibits the ability to remain competitive.
