President Obama will not travel to Germany to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9. White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said today that President Obama’s schedule will not allow for a visit to Germany. “Obviously, we have a lot to work on here and we have commitments for an upcoming Asia trip,” Gibbs said.

Behind Obama's Berlin Wall Snub

In his first year in office, Barack Obama has visited more foreign countries than any other president. He's touched ground in 16 countries, easily outpacing Bill Clinton (three) and George W. Bush (eleven). It's an itinerary befitting a "citizen of the world."

But there's one stop Obama won't make. He has begged off going to Berlin next week to attend ceremonies commemorating the fall of the Berlin Wall. His schedule is reportedly too crowded. John F. Kennedy famously told Berliners, "Ich bin ein Berliner."

On the 20th anniversary of the last century's most stirring triumph of freedom, Obama is telling them,

"Ich bin beschäftigt"

- i.e., I'm busy.

Re-imposing totalitarian information control in Russia

.
The internet, Russia's last source of information free of state control is now under threat. Seizing control of internet freedom could be the next step in the re-imposition of totalitarianism in Russia.

Over the past decade, while proud KGB spy Vladimir Putin has held power, there have been two alarming trends.

First, the Russian government has taken control of all the traditional mass media organs. The Russian counterparts to ABC, CBS, NBC, The New York Times, The LA Times and The Washington Post are all directly owned and operated by the Russian government.

Second, one after another -- starting with legislator Galina Starovoitova and continuing to most recently include human rights activist Natalia Estemirova -- the Russian government's critics have been murdered. Needless to say, these killings have not been reported on the traditional mass media, much less has any complicity by the Kremlin been alleged.

The Kremlin's response to Western criticism of this neo-Soviet media crackdown has been singular: "Don't worry," we're told, because "the Russian Internet remains free and vibrant" and it picks up any slack left by the traditional media. Most recently, Russian "president" Dmitri Medvedev repeated this claim while being interviewed by CNN's milquetoast-in-chief, Fareed Zakaria, who let it pass without a word.

To put it bluntly, that claim is a shameless lie...

Boxer Breaks Climate Bill Committee Rules Two Days Running

Subject: txt grn crpt reps libs cali -
Apparently, rules don’t apply to zealots-with-gavels convinced they were put on this planet to secure its salvation. Lacking a single occupied Republican seat in the room, Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee chair Barbara Boxer (D-CA) has nonetheless moved markup of the climate bill she cosponsors ahead for a second straight day. And in doing so, the ever-arrogant eco-crusader appears to be walking a thin green legal line.

So here we are at the second day of Kerry-Boxer markup and the second day Boxer chose to proceed without GOP representation, despite committee rules requiring two members of the minority be present in order to provide a quorum for a markup.

From a layman’s reading, one would surmise that although the bill can be reported out of committee with even less than a majority, at least 2 Republicans need be present to consider any amendments. In which case, Boxer’s decision to continue markup sessions without minority representation would be as illegal as it is unprecedented.

Gallup: Conservatives outnumber liberals 2-1

It's not surprising - we've been tracking this since Obama was elected. And here we are 10 months into the Age of Obama and all the talk about a "transformative" election where the country took a wild swing to the left last November has all but disappeared.

The election of Barack Obama was a political anomaly - a hiccup in an otherwise conservative body politic. The reasons are pretty obvious, beginning with a terrible GOP candidate who ran an abysmal campaign, coupled with the Republicans turning away from conservative principles while being corrupted by power in Washington.

Here are the raw numbers from Gallup going back to 1992:

Victory is inherent in those numbers...if:

1. If the Republican party returns to its conservative roots.

2. If the GOP can come up with a winning, positive agenda that will attract independents who are more responsive to that kind of message.

3. If Republicans can convince conservatives that they have mended their profligate spending ways and are now ready to make the hard choices on the budget to save us from bankruptcy.

Unfortunately, I see very little of this taking place at the national level. Obviously, reform will have to bubble up from the bottom.

The New York Times editorial page is a perfect weather vane for the way the liberal media's hot air is blowing. In an October 26 editorial called "Torching the Big Tent," they lamented: "The feeble pulse of moderation in the Republican Party is in danger of flat-lining in the Nov. 3 Congressional election in upstate New York."

The "moderate" the Times was backing for Congress was Dede Scozzafava - pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage, pro-union power, pro-tax hike. The Times found these positions to be proof of "refreshing tinges of centrism."

The Times lectured the conservative movement to embrace this candidacy, since "creative ideas and candidates, not right-wing zeal, are the obvious way to get back in the game of democracy."

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says, “Unless we fight climate change, unless we stop this trend, we’ll have devastating consequences for humanity.”

Other leaders make similar silly statements. Obama claims the “threat from climate change is serious, it is urgent, and it is growing.”

But which way is it growing? Which trend are they going to stop? The one predicted by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) or the one Mother Nature is providing? They’ve chosen the IPCC even though all their predictions (scenarios) are wrong.

But it is worse. Global temperatures of the last few years are impossible according to the ‘science’ of the (IPCC).

What’s Actually Happening?

Temperatures were predicted to increase but are declining (Figure 1). Even their lowest scenario says the world should be at least 0.3¬∞C warmer. Doesn’t sound like much but it equals half the warming they claim occurred in the preceding 130 years.

As physicist David Douglass said, “If the facts are contrary to any predictions, then the hypothesis is wrong no matter how appealing.”

Since 2002 temperatures declined gradually, making a trend that began in the Southern Hemisphere 10 years earlier global.

AGW proponents are now trying to prove the trend doesn’t exist...

The Pillars of Liberal Progressivism

Liberal Progressives have fashioned so strong a hold on the American political landscape that to escape their clutches may no longer be possible for most citizens

What I call the 'Pillars of Liberal Progressivism' have infected America with a virus so deadly that fighting it has become extremely difficult. What are these pillars that progressives have worked so hard to erect in order to infiltrate and control?

  • 1) University Academia: ... Students schooled in the writings of radical revolutionaries such as Mao, Lenin, Trotsky -- and lesser-known malcontents like Alinsky, Zinn, and Chomsky -- spread their noxious fumes throughout the halls of academia... [snip]
  • 2) Law Schools: ... Those infected with this radical new virus could now expand their activities to include law schools. What better way to attain a redress of grievances against a racist, sexist, homophobic nation than to change the Constitution... [snip]
  • 3) Primary and Secondary Education: ... The lessons learned in academia could now be spread to the more basic levels of education ... the Hard Left would give no quarter in acceptance of gay lifestyles, wealth redistribution, equality of outcome - these became staples in the indoctrination of the very young... [snip]
  • 4) Entertainment: ... The film industry offered itself in humble prostration to these noble ideas. Films depicting the evils of capitalism and the inadequacy of the free market spawned a whole new generation of useful idiots to spread the biblical word...[snip]
  • 5) News Media: ... The infection of the newsroom continues unabated today with such lackluster cronies as Brian Williams, Charles Gibson, and Katie Couric reporting a brand of news so skewed to the Left that "embarrassing" would be its most flattering description...[snip]

These are the pillars Liberal Progressives have safely ensconced in their method of attack on America. The restoration of our country to a more reasonable state may lie beyond hope. Those of us who can must make our voices heard to all of the above institutions.

We have to come in from the wilderness of being afraid to confront Liberals on their ground. We must fight the bankrupt ideas of socialism in academia through the media. The internet has given us an outlet that must not be squandered; it may well provide the ground for a last stand...

[Again, it's the control of these institutions which explains how a 2:1 center-right nation seems {as media portrayal is perceptional reality for many} perpetually teetering on socialistic suicide. Recommended > ]

The Worst Bill Ever

Epic new spending and taxes, pricier insurance, rationed care, dishonest accounting: The Pelosi health bill has it all

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has reportedly told fellow Democrats that she's prepared to lose seats in 2010 if that's what it takes to pass ObamaCare, and little wonder. The health bill she unwrapped last Thursday, which President Obama hailed as a "critical milestone," may well be the worst piece of post-New Deal legislation ever introduced.

In a rational political world, this 1,990-page runaway train would have been derailed months ago. With spending and debt already at record peacetime levels, the bill creates a new and probably unrepealable middle-class entitlement that is designed to expand over time. Taxes will need to rise precipitously, even as ObamaCare so dramatically expands government control of health care that eventually all medicine will be rationed via politics.

Yet at this point, Democrats have dumped any pretense of genuine bipartisan "reform" and moved into the realm of pure power politics as they race against the unpopularity of their own agenda. The goal is to ram through whatever income-redistribution scheme they can claim to be "universal coverage." The result will be destructive on every level—for the health-care system, for the country's fiscal condition, and ultimately for American freedom and prosperity...

Goodies for trial lawyers in House 'reform' bill

Subject: txt 1st hcare crpt reps libs bbro -
Considering how much cash trial lawyers pour into Democratic party coffers every year, it seems only fitting that they would receive some golden nuggets that benefit them at the expense of everyone else.

Jennifer Rubin writing at Commentary Contentions:

A friend points out a little nugget of absurdity and political mendacity in the Pelosi health-care bill. Remember Obama's effort to try a "test" for tort reform? (We don't actually need a test, since it has worked to lower medical malpractice coverage and help increase access to doctors in every state that has tried it.)

Well, Pelosi's bill has an anti-tort-reform measure. On pages 1431-1433 of the 1990 page spellbinder, there is a financial incentive for states to try "alternative medical liability laws."

But look - you don't get the incentive if you have a law that would "limit attorneys' fees or impose caps on damages."

When Disrespecting the People is Worth it

Subject: txt reps 1st hcare libs crpt msm bias -
Galling disrespect for the electorate is the only explanation for the absurd twists of facts and phrases coming from the Democrats

With countless examples of the media ignoring news that might damage Democrats, it seems this practice has bred a sense of security among the party's leaders. They even appear emboldened by their media allies as they get closer than ever to something they've craved for decades: complete control of the health care industry.

To wit, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her band of Pelosheviks are compelled to tell us that things are not what we know they are.

Last week, Pelosi said with a straight face (I've been waiting to use that line) that the expiration of the Bush tax cuts next year will not be a tax increase, but rather the "eliminating a tax decrease that was there." This would be funny stuff if she were not in charge of our nation's fiscal health... [snip]

For example, we are treated to a budget-busting "stimulus" that the White House admitted has stimulated just about all it can. Likewise, we get a defense funding bill that includes anti-gay hate crimes legislation buried deep within it. With Republicans in Washington now irrelevant even to their constituents, cries of GOP obstructionism sound cynical even to the politically clueless.

Lacking a credible bogeyman to blame for the ugly legislative process and its unpopular consequences, however, the Democrats do not even pretend to talk frankly about their plans to control one sixth of our economy. With unquenchable avarice for control over every health care decision in America, Democrats have ramped up their assault on transparency by writing the health care bill in total secrecy... [snip]

Has America grown tired of the Democrats' utter disrespect for the electorate? Democrats in Congress might think they will not suffer dire consequences for their recent shenanigans. Or maybe they know they will, and that is the cause of their desperate rush to pass healthcare reform regardless of how bad it makes them look...

[Because they know that once they've that lever over the American people, their permanent majority is inevitable over time. Its never had anything to do with health care - or congress, which controls the eligibility criteria for Medicare, would make everyone eligible overnight.

But Medicare participation is voluntary, so that just won't do.]

Congressman Becomes Angry at Helath Care Plans Being Questioned

Subject: txt 1st hcare crpt reps -
Congressman Earl Pomeroy (photo) of North Dakota, a supposed Blue Dog Democrat fiscal hawk, demonstrated his peculiar brand of "hawkishness" this week when he quickly announced his support of Nancy Pelosi's health care bill via a press conference call for media... [snip]

You can hear the audio on Rob's blog. And now the angry reaction from the Duke of Earl over being questioned by a non-approved blogger peon:

"... my question was a fair one about how exactly forcing Americans to buy their health care through a government health care exchange was going to promote competition. Pomeroy didn’t have a good answer, and chose to attack the questioner instead..."

Finally a pertinent observation from Port:

"What surprised me about the call almost as much as Pomeroys aggressive, agitated reaction to my question was how few questions the other reporters on the call asked. Aside from my question, there were only two other questions asked.

Apparently the reporters on the call were satisfied with just taking down what Pomeroy told them.
"

It looks like Pomeroy doesn't like taking incisive questions from an independent media source. Only affirmative rubberstamping from the approved media list of his decision to burden the taxpayers with budget busting ObamaCare will do.

CBO: ObamaCare will Cover Only 2% of US Citizens

Subject: txt 1st hcare -
You may have missed it, as the Obama State-run media sycophants have worked feverishly to suppress it. One of a handful of media outlets that did publish anything on it (AP) devoted only one paragraph to this extremely important piece of news. Said paragraph reads:

"A Congressional Budget Office estimate suggests very few Americans under the age of 65 would sign up for health insurance under the much-debated public option. The CBO found that the scaled back government plan in the House version of health care legislation couldn’t overtake private insurance, with only about 2 percent of Americans under the age of 65 opting in..."

This is important because it completely contradicts what Obama and the White House have been saying for months…and months...

Democrats' Quiet Changes Pile Up

.

Last week, Mr. Obama signed defense-policy legislation that included an unrelated measure widening federal hate-crimes laws to cover sexual orientation and gender identification -- 12 years after it was first introduced. The same legislation also tightened the rules of admissible evidence for military commissions, an issue that consumed Congress in debate in 2007 but received almost no attention this go-round.

Other new measures signed into law since the administration took office, all of which kicked up controversy in past congresses, make it easier for women to sue for equal pay, exclude land in the West from any form of energy development, give the government the power to regulate tobacco and raise tobacco taxes to expand health insurance for children. Congress and the White House, in the new defense-policy bill, also killed weapons programs that have survived earlier attempts at termination, among them, the F-22 fighter jet and the Army's Future Combat System.

Rob Nabors, the White House's deputy budget director, called the series of new laws

"a very, very quiet but important victory."
[snip]

Other issues that once consumed Congress are now sailing into law, often without much public notice.

Senior White House political adviser David Axelrod said his opponents in Congress are absorbed with defeating Mr. Obama's health-care overhaul, what he calls "the shiny object that they've chased." As a result, he contends, other measures have been left to pass into law.

"The administration is pushing so many things so rapidly it's difficult to concentrate on all of them"

Rep. Tom Price (R., Ga.), a conservative leader in the House, concedes that, in some cases, Republicans are being overwhelmed; While President Barack Obama still faces stiff headwinds on a range of major legislation on his agenda, he has been signing into law a slew of smaller initiatives that had gathered dust on the Democratic wish list for years...

Regardless of how lively an election season might be, a new study shows that more 3.3 million voters on current registration rolls across the country are dead. Another 12.9 million remain on voter registration lists in an area where they no longer live.

Nationally, 1.87 percent of registered voters are dead, while 7.2 percent of voters do not live where they are registered...

[Again and again: every serious study comparing our manual system to electronic options shows that, while none are perfect, electronic systems are an dramatically less inaccurate.

Which is why they're so consistently opposed by the Left.]
